Chapter Four
It was the night before Christmas. I had handed out mince pies and small glasses of sherry to people all day and, for once, had actually enjoyed the manic rush of the last shopping day before the big event. My stock was decimated—I would have a lot of work come Boxing Day, but I didn’t much care. I had a proper Christmas dinner to look forward to—a Christmas day I would actually enjoy.
I was just tidying around before picking up my coat to leave when the bell on my shop door jangled. There’s always that last-minute shopper desperate for one more gift. I turned around with my shop assistant smile fixed in place, and it dropped to a gasp of shock as I realised who stood there.
“Sean? What are you doing here?”
“Well, funnily enough, I’m looking for you,” he replied with an awkward smile.
“Oh, well in that case you’ve found me.” We laughed then, and came together in the middle of the floor in a flurry of limbs.
“You’re looking good,” he said as he pulled away from the hug. “Really good.”
“Thank you.” I giggled coyly. I was red-cheeked from effort and a drop or two of sherry, and knew my hair was escaping from its bun. Imagine what he’d have thought if he’d seen me at my best! “You’re looking good, too,” I replied.
He looked cool and collected in tight jeans and a casual jacket in royal blue. His hair was slightly spiked at the front and he smelt fresh and zesty—my stomach flipped at his scent.
“I wondered if you might like to go out for a drink with me, since I’m here,” he said. “Catch up, you know—get reacquainted.”
“Sure.” I smiled. “That’d be lovely. I’m just shutting up shop now—I mean, if you want to go right away, that is.”
“Definitely,” he replied with a nod. “I’ve waited long enough to see you again.”
We chatted amiably and I closed down. I found out he was a bank manager who worked in Birkenhead, where we’d grown up together. He’d moved back there after university. He was interested in me and the shop, and asked about my parents. It was all rather surreal, really.
“I’m staying at the Lincoln Hotel—we could go there for drinks,” he said, and I nodded. I would have gone anywhere with him right then. I was so fascinated by his reappearance and curious to know more. I’ll be honest with you—I did think about Carl, but only for a moment. I reasoned with myself that going for a drink with an old mate wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. Carl wouldn’t mind, I was sure…or at least that’s what I told myself, anyway.
It wasn’t a long walk over to the hotel, though climbing the hill from my shop was a little bit of a challenge as the snow had turned to slush with the aid of grit and people walking. I had to grip Sean for stability—I didn’t want to slip and roll to the bottom of that hill.
